I thought this was a huge red flag from someone I'd seen a number of times for a few years, and left rather than drop my money on the floor of a hotel. I got the sense that she was leaving the business and ripping off her customers as a parting gift.

Exactly! I just walk into hotels like I have a room there. I dress in sweats and clothes that seem like I am going back to my room.
