They would much rather the US help them get control over the drug lords and secure their own country because they do not have the power to do it themselves.

The heart of the problem is the rabid consumption of drugs in this country. We're just enabling all the mayhem south of the border. Cartels will always find a way to get their products in. Border enforcement is just a fallacy. I don't see this ending any time soon.

Agreed. So far, over 2 million have come over the border this year. Many underage with debts to make good on to the criminal element, so selling themselves is the answer for many, and it's not by choice.
