Textfree is wonderful. I use that number exclusively for the hobby and if I want minutes ill take a shit and watch videos until I get 5-6 minutes which is all you need anyway.

Google voice. Permanent number, retains all pics / videos, free voice calls, requires linking to a real phone number.

Pinger / Textfree. Lose number after a period of inactivity, retains all pics / videos sent to the account, drawback as noted above you have to watch ads to get voice minutes.

Textnow. Lose number after a period of inactivity, lose pics / videos after 30 days, free voice calls.

Other less common apps also seem to require linking to a real number (sending a confirmation text).

Turning off notifications, at least for me, doesn’t prevent the app from taking over my phone when a call comes in, so if you have something to hide, I would recommend logging out or even deleting the app and reinstalling it when needed.

I have to agree with sir Falken. TextNow seems to be quite the fit for my needs. I do need to remember to turn off notifications from time to time, so the significant other doesn't know about my trysts.
