You don't have to keep the auto renewal on.

Just after you pay for the month, cancel the auto renewal option and then proceed to remove the credit card info that is below it. By the end of the month the membership will expire.

The best way to experiment is to bite the bullet and spend the $240 for the 90 day, one time fee, to get a feel for how it works in the areas you live or frequent. It doesn't automatically renew, so for the money, you can learn a lot in 90 days, and if it works for you, then renew another 90 days. If not, then you don't have to struggle to get the monthly auto-billing stopped.
