Walmart got prepaid Verizon wireless phones for 12 bucks.

I tried that approach (cheap $20 phone from Walmart) - the problem is texting on them is very difficult. They have an old style numeric keyboard. Making it very difficult to ask questions via text. Personally it drove me crazy. There is an other app you can download "Burner" phone where you can buy a real number then burn it whenever you want and to go to a new number. The annoying part is you lose all your call / text history each time you "burn" the number. Good news is you are done with that number once you burn it!!

FYI. This is an android app.
