Just adding my own take on the matter. I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time, but I'm pretty confident they were fake.

Personally, I find that when they are on their back to be the best way to confirm if they are real or fake, aside from getting it from the horse's mouth. I didn't bother looking for scars as I already confirmed from touch and the aforementioned visual test. Regardless if you prefer them real or not, I posted my take on it because there are mongers out there that may find this information useful.
