I've seen a number of posts on these boards where people have indicated they carry their sidearm with them when they make these visits (IMO. Not generally a good idea given everything that can go wrong there). That said, given the landscape of all the thieves and lowlifes out there however, it's understandable.

My suggestion. If you're not comfortable in a physical confrontation (if it comes to that), carry a small container of pepper spray (size of a Chapstik). If you're intent on not getting bullied / robbed – it'll incapacitate the scum bag pretty quickly.
