No, I have not tried to help a provider. Many gave and it seems like it always backfires. The white knight posts followed by a deluge of requests and ultimately it ruins the provider with with GPS or bad experiences. It typically ends badly.

Generally, no. The only exception I make is when I'm traveling to other cities and am seeing higher end providers with alot of reviews on TER where they mentioned deposits. I don't like doing it, but have never been burned. New York is a good example. You can certainly find good providers that don't require it, but it's become very common for it to be a requirement amongst quality providers. And if you really want to see a particular provider, it's the only choice. I've done it many times now. This is the only exception I make. If I see a local ad with a deposit required, I move on every time.

The one thing I will never make an exception on is providing real life information on me. I do not like the trend of requiring a picture of your license or a business card, or a LinkedIn profile.
