The direct answer to your question is to ask them what they want for verification. As you noted, it's usually some combination of none, to provider references, to agency references, to verification service (E. G, P411) to ID (driver's license. Sometimes with info redacted, work badge, etc.) to selfie. Know what you're willing to provide upfront, and if it's too much, or you don't have it move on. In my experience, the better agencies (better girls and more professional interactions) will require verification; however, not always true, and there are gems to be found everywhere.
