Just a tip: if anyone considers using WhatsApp, make sure you use it with a Google Voice number or a burner number. Your phone number isn't hidden. One of the reasons scammers / extortionists like to use WhatsApp. If you have a personal WhatsApp account already, you can install WhatsApp for Business, tie that to a different number and that way have two WhatsApp 'profiles' on the same phone.

I very much prefer texting using WhatsApp. I have used Google voice for many years but it's a pain, it doesn't reliably allow you to send photos, doesn't have video calling, and periodically freezes me out when I'm traveling or send too many texts in a day (all of these complaints at least through the web accessible version). WhatsApp does all of these things well, allows you to lock and hide chats, and has much better encrypted messaging, with post-sending deletion features and other options that are useful. It's catching on as well, so that's my two cents.
