I was wondering by about telegram and there a club that was talking about it. Is it pretty private? I can't remember if it was the same app but I think when I signed up one time or it was a coworker said hey I saw you were online.

This is a PSA on all social media apps. If you use Telegram, KKT, or any other popular apps make sure to set your profile to private and hide your contact info. I would also not share your contact info. Some of these apps tie your account to your phone number. Whereas others like Instagram don't (making it easier to support multiple accounts).

As long as you set all these things to private, there are a few caveats. Even when your account is private and not searchable and your phone number not searchable, if your account is tied to your phone number there are still connections that can happen. I suppose if you have limited use and low expectations for these, and have other hobby uses for them, that is better. For example I use Telegram for AI art but not this hobby. I don't consider Telegram to be very secure by default. Although Wechat is not secure, but in Wechat's case China could care less about the hobby and they only scan for internal trouble. So you could look at that as an upside.

In practice, you have to use whatever apps other people are using. When I go Japan, they all want to use LINE. Except and unless they don't want to give you their "real contact", then they give you everything except LINE! To sum up, the very first time you sign up for a new app is to go through every setting and make sure it is configured right for you. This actually more true for an old app you haven't used in years and forgot what you entered in.
