Couple things don't add up to me: knocking at the door and smoking before an appointment. Both things aren't things most mongers would do. It's usually explicitly stated to wait for the door to open and / or don't knock. This is mainly done to not draw attention from neighboring tenants. And smoking, well, it speaks for itself.
