What does it cost me, $1000 a year? That's considerably less than I pay in home insurance. And let me tell you, I am far more interested in avoiding a divorce than a house fire.

But if you cannot afford to do that or if you don't share my values or have a higher risk tolerance than me, that's fine. The answer to the question asked remains that one should take steps when separating from a SB to ensure that she doesn't feel disgruntled or feel invested in a payback of some kind. The goal is that if you're on the same flight as her with your wife in five years, or if she's your bartender some day, she gives you a sly wink and not that she slips a note into your wife's purse or starts showing her screenshots she saved or some other nightmare shit like that.

Most importantly, you need to be discriminating about who you see. 24 year old law student who's originally from Naperville? In a couple years she is going to be going to all the same restaurants as you. 22 year old bartended? She's going to be the bartender at the restaurant you go to with your wife someday. Northwestern student athlete from Los Angeles? Probably okay. She's going to move back to California. Nineteen year old CNA from Elmhurst who wants to get her cosmetology degree someday and thinks mass shootings are staged hoaxes organized by George Soros? She's never going to be outside a two mile radius of her house.

It's also important to end things well, even if it's short term. Give her a double allowance if you're ending it in person. Tell her you met a normal girlfriend that you really want to try to make things worth with. You want her to think of your time as a positive experience and not anything she'll be holding a grudge over. You'll want to be thinking about that from the beginning. I have a couple good lies I tell right at the beginning that help me lay the groundwork for an exit and help reduce the motivation for a confrontation.

All good points. I also tried to make sure I would never meet my SBs in real life. Let's say Adam is a white man of Slovenian heritage in Northbrook. Adam would do well getting a Hispanic SB from Tinley Park. No intersection of interests, friends or locations. Distance might be too much but you get the idea.
