Same here, I always ask upfront before the date so that I can know without money being involved. I've had guys tell me that my success rate will increase if I wait until we're ready for action, but I'm not willing to let things progress that far until I know for sure. First, she'll expect to be paid once I'm at her incall (or she's in my vehicle) and second, if she gets pissed-off for my asking her for BB then I'll have to deal with that. I don't really care if I end-up with zero dates, I lost no money and didn't risk a nasty argument which could easily escalate. I always ask at the initial point of communication. It may seem impossible, but some do say yes.

Trying to get back into the hobby after a long hiatus and I definitely struck out hard this week. My approach to BBFS is always to ask in person: small talk up front to put them at ease and then a polite "can we go without" once they produce a cover.
