It's probably a scam to sell a 'premium' Snapchat where they get some money from you maybe send a few pics, then it goes dead because they don't keep it up for some reason.

The slightly more legit reason is you can text someone within the app and it disappears after a day or so. So no record if there's a nosy boyfriend. I'm not sure how recoverable the messages are but it's probably more difficult for the police to see anything as well.
