My general strategy is to ask the girl to do it once we are there. I hand her just enough cash for the room and she goes into the office and signs in. That way if any I'd is used, it's hers. Ditto with license plate #. If they ask her, she just says she has Uber'd over or she just takes a random plate # from the parking lot.

Sometimes the girl doesn't have I'd, in which case it's up to her to beg to be allowed in. In my experience, they always manage to do it. The motel wants the money, esp if it's cash in hand, and so does the girl. So it is in their interest to bend the rules a little.

Not a perfect system, and of course YMMV, but that's what works for me.
