I use a cheap prepaid bought through walmart as a set up phone. You just take it to a local provider store (depending on which one you get, I use att) and they can set it up. I told them mine was for a friend and I did not want it registered to me. I then use prepaid card to recharge monthly. No big loss if I have to ditch the phone or it breaks.
