The question about what have you done in previous arrangements is a common way to broach the issue. I don't think it is relevant and say that. What did you pay for your last car? Do you expect to pay the same for the one you are trying to buy today? They aren't the same and the market isn't the same.

If they really persist in this I can tell a girl about my last truly long-term arrangement, where I was giving her 1 K / mo for 3 meets (but we would have coffee the week she was on her period, because we genuinely like each other). You seem to have more experience w / this than you post. I always defer allowance discussions as long as possible and make the girl go first. They will always have a lower ask. No one wants to be rejected to their face. I agree, negotiating isn't easy, you have to be close to the same page. At a recent M&G, the girl told me she was getting 3 K / mo from a stupid lawyer in LA. Even though their arrangement failed because his wife caught on, and I am a very different proposition in terms of knowledge and safety (=reliable as a SD), I couldn't imagine her ever being satisfied w / what I could provide financially. So I just excused myself from her pursuit.
