Your self-characterization seems correct. I've been on the site for years, and I've never had a suspicion that anything like this is happening. There are many other sites that have many many weird things happening, likely fake profiles and messages, made only to drain your bank account, not your c*.

I periodically remove picture access as well (just because I don't want people with extended access) and have had some success connecting with an SB that way. I don't think its any more than they get literally 100's of messages a day and missed my first message. So, when I remove access and they're notified, it actually draws their attention one last time.
