I've done similar to this for several cities, and it's worth the time and effort! For the one-off trips, there's a bit of fun involved. For the places I go regularly or semi-regularly, I can usually see someone several times. It's also worked well for my Europe trips.

Howdy RVA Mongers, I come from the very very dead NYC SB thread. Posted in there about dusting off my seeking account and getting back in the bowl this fall and figured I would also share experiences with the more lively crowd over here.
