Faulkner often has sentences that run on for a page or more, with nothing but ellipsis and commas as breaks, especially when writing from the POV of a character who's not playing with a full deck.

Street people, especially addicts, have an animal instinct for manipulating normies. I would classify them as psychopaths, just a matter of degree. Not serial killers but the no-conscience / get what they want mindset is the same. I know a girl that used to panhandle. She was able to scam enough money to maintain her habit and only hooked when desperate. She had me pegged as a chump. I only got the BS stories and never asked for or was offered anything else.

I've done addicts but that one was "special". I refused to take advantage of her impairment. Cost me a lot of money, headaches and heartache but my hands are clean. And she did eventually get off the street and cleaned up.

Maybe a bit of "bait", like a small amount of $$ with hints that more might be available would work. I think some women "shift gears" where they would say "I'm not that kind of person" but depending on the circumstances of the day, might engage in some transactional activity.
