I just make sure that there is booking available last min before I tell the SB hotel location. Normally I just book a room and plan a to use the room with 2 different SBs. If new SB is flakes I can still use the room for one of my regulars. Unfortunately currently all my 6 SBs are spread out in VA and MD, and only 2 out of my 6 SBs have a car. Just what I have to deal with when you chased after 18-24 years olds. Damn, I was trying to thin my rotation down to 4, but got back in 6 again.

I have found that you can cancel a room without penalty, if the reservation was made the same day. Especially if the cancellation was within a few hours of booking. This is directly through the hotel's own app, not through a 3rd party reseller like Priceline. There are times you may want to book ahead of time when the hotel's app tells you there are limited rooms left at a certain rate or room type. Something I was surprised to learn is that with some hotels, you can book a smoking room (if they have smoking rooms) with a credit card, but pay with cash at check-in and there is no charge on cc statement. Obviously if you cause damage they will charge against the hold on cc. At some of these places (and they are national chains) you can also just pay cash with cash deposit. But these smoking rooms tend to sell out first, especially on weekends.

If they won't let you cancel without penalty, try to rebook room to next day or later date. Recently at a higher end hotel with 4 day advance cancellation policy, they let me push back room a day without penalty. Even with hotels YMMV, check with the front desk.
