Very easy to track a plate these days as the information is Public for the most part. They can use an online service or just go down to the court house (doubt they will do this) to get the registered owner of the vehicle.

I think there are paid services online that can be used to do license plate lookups. Never tried them so do not know how accurate they are. Not sure what other information they need before releasing this information. But I can pretty confidently say that it is possible.
