I've been looking into getting a radar detector so that I can be one step ahead of the police when I'm cruising. I've never used one before. How useful are they?

The streets aren't for me, but I like reading the reports you guys write. I thought I should share this thread for guys who want to build the streets into their options. It's for Tampa, so the specific geography discussion will not be useful. However, the general tips are very sensible (esp. Checking your car to make sure she didn't accidentally drop her drugs).

I will offer my humble agreement with everything that Stosh said. It all depends upon your risk / reward threshold. I myself have ventured into a vast majority of the city in search of "fun". You seem to need to have your head on a swivel a lot. Some I will venture, some I will not. That is my choice. Also being familiar with your surroundings plays a large part. That is why this forum play such a vital role in allowing us to enjoy yourselves and not get into something that was not prepared. Keep the information coming. It help everybody.

Completely agree. Anyone who has never been to those around those areas on the West Side is about to get a tour of Chiraq. I wouldn't venture lightly, a lot could go wrong. The only neighborhoods more troubled are around Englewood. Yeah, some of these areas are fine to drive through and stop at certain places. But you don't want to venture into these areas and just start driving around areas with SWs. SWs mean drugs, gangs, pimps, police, and you don't want any of those. Plus, damage to your car. Ever drive through these areas? What do you notice? The streets are not kept, deep pot holes and bumps could flatten a tire easily and then you're stuck. You kind of got to know what to expect to navigate all this. I'd call the areas by Englewood or Garfield Park /5th Cicero to be Expert Level only. If you need something safer and more your speed then I'd say the Northside. No, there's not as much action, but you'll find some and less chance of danger from gangs or police. Try Lawrence between Pulaski and Kedzie. Or Cicero between Belmont and Armitage.

However, I know that there are trucking firms across the street with a guard shack and guard posted as well as lots of employee eyes looking around during their smoke breaks. Now would I hang down there after hours late nights. Not a blanking chance even if someone on here total me a victoria secret model likes to street walk just for the adventure while staying at a five star suite hotel downtown! It's just really use common sense fellas. Look at 5 and cic during the day. It's a war zone! Streets fricked up, abandoned cars, et al. So imo agree that the northside can be safer, however the strolls seems to be either 5 or 47th and to me I just don't know the ins and outs of those areas to feel ok after hours. Sure I could get lucky and get a decent hummer for 20 30 beans, however I also could wind up very dead. All just imo and again I always appreciate input from you guys positive and negative. Sometimes those posts crop up and I wonder are they trolls, fuzz, what? I agree in that one will need to hone their skills, however those streets these days are very unforgiving. Down there is one of the highest murder rates in the country. Now add to that drugs, cash, w**es, pimps, et al. Imo as the fuzz used to tell me when I was doing freebie community work down there "the life is a bad mixture". These are desperate people doing desperate things. There are no guarantees even online and paying big cash. The providers know as well as their pimps that "who ya going to call? Exists. When one is ripped off then one is just ripped off. Go home, lick ones wounds and be thankful one is alive to live again. So yea I think the two posters both have valid points. Now imo I just won't hit those streets. I don't mind paying and I have some disposable cash so if things go south. WTF I leave my money and carry on. Again the dude described might not have the cash to play on line and needs to get it from the streets. I think, well almost, that what was being warned is that there will be a learning curve on those mean streets and hopefully one can pay that price. Stay safe to all, gents. Stosh. Tired old man. Did they clean up 5th and Cic or something? Went around 1:30 AM late Thursday / early Friday and it was absolutely deserted. 3 circle around and saw nada. Same with Kenton and the streets around there.

I know the quality can vary but I've never seen it just empty at night.

Oh well. I need to find some reliable streets for BSWs on the Southside.

I don't know but I've definitely gone out there to dead streets on like early Saturday evenings and such but if I stick around there long enough, they pop out. It's just not the same.
