You think all SBs have one set asking price? They'll ask whatever they think they'll get from their prospective johns. If they think they'll get 300 from one dude and 1 K from another, they'll do it in a heartbeat! As such, you can't really hold it against them. You yourself must determine if the "juice is worth the squeeze. " Make your own personal determination of whether or not a woman's asking price is worth it. If you have doubts about whether you can afford it, or doubt that the woman will deliver as advertised, then you ought to stand your ground. Don't pony up a single cent over what you originally intended to spend. Remember, they're the ones selling a product. So don't give them any more power than they've already got (which in this region is substantial enough, unfortunately).

How does one find these events? A while back I was talking to a cougar from SA who mentioned being involved in this scene and going to parties but she eventually ghosted and we never made a connection.

I remember 10 years ago or so that a well-known & respected provider up in the Howard County region held sex parties every couple of months. As I recall, it was a 3-4 hour party with her and 3-4 of her escort friends. They were all reasonably-priced and well-reviewed in their own right. The price was up in this range. It was not a swinger's party with couples & single guys. It was an all-you-can-eat sex party with food & drink in the main family room so you could socialize between sessions. The sessions were private, although some were group sex events if the girls were up for it. Individually, I would have spent $250-$300 each if I saw them individually. The organizer did a great job, but, what eventually liked these parties were guys who reserved a slot and then flaked. Great times in my younger days!
