The Mile Road designation was assigned first. Six Mile was renamed McNichols in northwest Detroit for the University of Detroit president who moved the school from downtown to Six Mile and Livernois. The name change took place after he died in 1932. It has nothing to do with suburbs "distancing" themselves from Detroit.
