Here's what I used to do: go into a store like Walgreens and get the cheapest phone from a carrier that offers a prepaid plan and then a scratch-off card with some airtime ($10, $25, whatever). Once I had the phone and the scratch-off card, I'd pop the SIM into the phone and power it on. There were instructions as to how to choose a plan--I recall that all they wanted was a ZIP code so you could be issued a reasonably local number (so if you entered downtown Chicago, 60606, then you'd get a 312 or 773 number or the like), and then you entered a sequence on the keypad to indicate what plan you wanted. Afterwards you'd power the phone off and back on, then a (free) text message would pop up showing your new number.

At that point the phone has zero airtime, so then you get the code from your scratch-off card (like using a lotto ticket) and enter that into the phone: after that you'll get a text message showing your airtime (amount and date of expiration). To avoid losing unused airtime, reload before the expiration date. If you let it remain in a lapsed state for too long, the service will be canceled and you'll no longer be able to make calls and use text messages. Then you'll have to go back to Walgreens but instead of buying the whole phone you just buy a SIM kit: the little chip that goes in the phone so you can get service. When you put the SIM in, you're back to having to choose a plan and supply a ZIP code so you get a fresh number. Then load some more airtime and you're back in business.

I could buy the phone, the airtime cards, and new SIM kits without ever showing ID. Cash only--I didn't have it set to any sort of autopay. The plan I had at the time charged a flat $2 per day if the phone was used at all on a given day (and I think they defined use as placing or receiving a call, and perhaps sending text messages--it's been awhile so I forgot). Hopefully some of this helps!

Hi, Windy Splurt. So I dug through my junk drawer and found that old phone: it was an AT&T device, so then it would have been their prepaid plan. Hunting online showed that the plan I was referring to below used to be called "$2 Daily Unlimited Talk and Text," but now when I try to pull up that plan on their website it says it's no longer available. I'm guessing if you had to go with a different prepaid plan, activating using just a ZIP code might still be an option. When COVID is over I'll have to come up with some sort of plan.

If you had to call an 800 (toll free0 number for the activation you could use a pay phone. Yes, they are a bit scarce but an option.

George Stark: I agree with LoveSmallPerky's assessment below. It's probably best to go with TracFone or one of the other prepaid-only carriers nowadays. The plan I used was for one of the major carriers back in 2019, maybe T-Mobile? But that seems to be no longer available when I hunted for it on their website just now; anyway I've let that account lapse awhile ago due to COVID. Good luck!
