Gascon's directive for select misdemeanors does not apply within LA City limits, which is City Attorney and LAPD territory. LAPD enforcement for misdemeanors, including prostitution, will continue as it did before Gascon's election. For the LA Westside, the only areas patrolled by LA Sheriff are West Hollywood and Marina Del Rey. Even if the Sheriff shared your opinion re: enforcement, it would only make a practical difference in the areas covered by this patrol map below:

LA City already has a diversion program for first-time offenders convicted of prostitution solicitation. It's informally known as John School, and those who attend get their charges dismissed. This is the most likely outcome for any readers of this thread who are unfortunate enough to get arrested.

But deputy DAs can still deviate from the directive and bring charges if special circumstances exist (and a supervisor approves).

The directive only covers misdemeanors handled by the LA County District Attorney's Office, which includes unincorporated areas of the county and all cities (except Burbank, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica and Torrance). Misdemeanors for the cities just mentioned are handled by the local City Attorney's office, which set their own policies.

Not sure fact checking has a place here, but I think that the la sheriff is simply not going to bother going after prostitution because Gascon just does not care. Like you say, he wants l. A. To be a shithole with no rule of law rather than have rule of law with the attendant problem of peaceful protests. Of course, we all know we will get both.

This applies narrowly to "streetwalkers" who wait out in the open with the intent to entice customers. It also applies to patrons who are present with the intent to engage a streetwalker. The key action for this particular crime is loitering.

Penal Code 647 (b) covers engaging in or soliciting prostitution. It's very much still on the books, and is not impacted by this directive.

The directive specifically mentions 647 (b) but with the heading of loitering.

It could be a typo and as you say, hooking is on the books still.

Or, maybe he is telling the d. A. 's office not to deal with 647 (b) if the charge is mainly a loitering charge.

It is unclear and I thought this would apply to l. A. City, and I am going to call the city attorney to find out if they actually prosecute misdemeanor johns.
