Let's take a look at what the major news stations / media outlets are saying about the debate, and with the exception of one network where opinion was divided (guess which! They all looked crestfallen. Or maybe shell-shocked. In case you are skeptical, here are some of the post-debate headlines:

Currently watching the presidential debates, and I must say Donald Trump is COMPLETELY running over Joe Biden.

The moderator is such a limp wrist simp, with ZERO backbone. He is allowing Trump to walk over them both and control the conversation.

Republican pollster Frank Luntz convened a focus group of 16 undecided voters from swing states, and in general they had kinder things to say about Biden's performance than Trump's.

Asked to describe Trump in one word or phrase, the responses were: horrid, chaotic, unpolished, crackhead, ehh, puzzling, un-American, unhinged, an ass, but a confident ass, classic Trump, forceful, unhinged, bully, arrogant, arrogant, typical.

Then, asked to describe Biden, the responses were: I was surprised at how well he did, better than expected, definitely more professional than Trump and I think he’s more a people person, competent, politician, showed restraint and compassion, politician, predictable, nice guy but lacking vision, coherent, leader, attentive and rehearsed, somewhat evasive, humanity and integrity, predictable, presidential.

Biden dismissed Trump as a "liar" and a "clown," at one point declaring him the "worst president that America has ever had. ". Trump did not impose his will on the proceedings, he had a massive meltdown on live TV. None of these facts can be disputed!

Over the years so much has changed: Once upon a time the republicans were for balanced budgets and financial restraint. Going further back, the Republicans were the party of freedom and equal rights for blacks. Now, Republicans don't seem to have a problem with deficit spending, bloated budgets and tax breaks for the well to do. On the other hand, the Dems used to be the party where most white racists hung out, now its the other way around. The Dems of today aren't leftists in any way. Ever since Clinton, the dems have been moving to the right, essentially being forced to do that by Newt Gingrich's Contract on America. The idea that liberals are leftist is spin from the propaganda machine. Take note, those with the most money tend to control the messaging we are all exposed to. If I hear first hand Trump say something ridiculous to the press, which he does almost everyday and, an outlet like CNN reports it or comments on it, that is called reporting and we should be thankful that some media folks take their jobs seriously. The best chance for common ground is to begin to agree on what the facts are and begin open conversations about our values. We aren't all that different but each group has some measure of alternative facts because the media is about money, not reality.

I appreciate your response and completely agree with you that money is bottom line with the media. I have to disagree with you about the Dems moving to the right, though. Someone else posted that theory a while back on this blog and I just don't see it at all unless you are considering that what they are promoting these days is so far to the left that it has curved around to the right. Another thing that I agree with you about is that Newt started this scorched earth animosity between the parties back in the mid-nineties with his take-no-prisoners approach. As far as common ground is concerned I'm very pessimistic about achieving that again until something cataclysmic occurs to drive more of us back to center again. Historically that seems to be the only way back to some semblance of sanity, something we don't have at all right now.

Liberals and conservatives used to balance each other out and the result was a somewhat balanced middle ground, the real truth being always somewhere in the middle. Now that the middle ground has been eliminated we are left with two unbalanced ideologies that left unto themselves would eventually destroy everything including themselves. Although I have no love or trust of Republicans the conservative approach seems to me to give us the best chance of at least some kind of balance and common sense, concepts that are completely lacking with the leftist / liberal approach which is to destroy everything without having anything reasonable to replace it with.

News flash, Newsweek has always been considered more right leaning than anything else. You might say it is to the left of far right but that still leaves it in the conservative, mainstream republican camp. Second did you read more than the headline because you have your FACTS wrong (big surprise there)? The article does NOT suggest that republicans are better looking.
