I'm going to say something that maybe is not "politically correct": If you are not a gang member, related to or affiliated to gang members, or are going around the city looking for trouble, you are going to be just fine. Yes, there are parts of the city that you should avoid for safety reasons, but is not like the media says that we kill each other for sport. If you are too worried, stay away from Englewood, south shore and Chatham, other than that you will be fine.

There are police all over the place in the loop, all the time right now. Very visible. I think there was a night or two of looting a month ago.

Chicago's crime and homicide rate per capita is higher than the national average, but still lower compared to plenty of other cities. If you're so worried about staying in one of the nicest areas of a large metro city, than stick to KC.
