Policies wary by location, the best way is to call the local number and ask. Most of them would like a credit card on file to lock the reservation. If you don't show up or cancel in time, they will charge the credit card.

Many hotels would also like a credit card for incidental damages to the room. You can always use a Visa gift card that you can buy from a grocery store. I do like to call and make the reservation VS booking online it is quicker.
