"Lying eyes" is an apt phrase; that's the whole point of data and mathematical modeling.

I personally have only known 3 or 4 people infected with COVID, and I haven't known anyone who's died from it (though I do know of one hospitalization, which was more observational, not an ICU situation.) If I went on objective observation alone, I would say the pandemic response is completely overblown.

BUT: I'm a scientist. I learned many, many years ago that my subjective experience might not only not be the whole picture, but could even lead me to wrong conclusions. So I look at data, and I try to use the best theory I can to build predictive models out of that.

It does take a certain degree of training and education, learning to reject subjective experience in favor of data-driven models (my analogy has always been when Luke dons the blast shield helmet for lightsaber training, "use the Force, Luke!"), but long-term when you see actual results (like you build a device and it works!) you convert.

We already spoke about SAC, but what I found before I retired after 23 years was that most flag officers and Colonels on their knees to become a flag officer became increasingly politically correct so as to not f* up their career that truly support their subordinate commanders in the trenches. They know that their promotion is in the hands of a very liberal congress and not so much the service so they sell their souls to the devil in the hopes of that promotion. Not all, but far too many and unfortunately too many I served under as one of those commanders in the trenches.

My experience is that the "quiet professional" style of soldier (SOCOM and SAC guys, older officer and flag rank guys, etc) don't particularly like Trump. They don't particularly like Biden, either. Their basic position is that they'll follow legal commands received through chain of command (meaning a lot of Trump's "dictator" fantasies they'd pretty much ignore). They'll generally vote Republican (overwhelmingly) because that's where the money is; the Democrats have really done nothing to merit military support (if they were smart, they would go all in on veteran programs.) I can't even think of a President the pro soldier last *loved*; I don't know, maybe Reagan. I think the appreciated Bush Jr, since he'd visit them and so on, but they're also aware that he put them in some problematic situations. Ultimately, though, their real "function" is protecting the Constitution, so a President who respects *that* (certainly not Trump or Obama) will have their loyalty. The grunt, oorah, and crayon-eating level of soldier pretty much adores Trump, for the same reason many of his core do: they're low information voters (as are all 18 and 19 year old kids). The youngest Marine I know (I guess he's about three years in at this point) is a good kid, but anything past service, hunting, and taking care of his young wife and baby is more than his noggin is capable of, so he's going to pretty much vote like a young man from Blairsville, GA (ie. For Trump).O.

I have spent entire week at defense place full with service members. I do not talk about politics and personal likes and dislikes at work but do not mind when people share their opinion.
