I never use my real number. But I don't understand the reason for using texting apps. Why not just use a burner phone like a tracphone burner bought at Walmart's with cash? It's only 20 bucks and then only another 20 bucks to buy a card, also with cash, to keep it active for 3 months. The number shows up on their "smart" phone's caller indentification the same as any other regular number, doesn't it? And it's untraceable. Or am I missing something?

I think there are a couple reasons. One, it's just extra expense and hassle compared to using an app. Two, I'm guessing married guys are afraid of their spouse finding their burner phone (would be a tough thing to explain, even if you didn't save any of the messages or numbers on it). An app you can simply delete when you're not using it. No evidence of it ever having been on your phone (at least not that a nosy spouse would spot just casually flicking through your phone).

It might work though for providers who require a real number, because it would at least show up as a number belonging to an actual cell carrier when you do a reverse lookup, and not as a VOIP number.

They don't want you to use you real number so they can "start shit". It's because there are a TON of guys who contact providers and set up appointments and then never show up. Or maybe it's just a few guys doing this from different numbers, which is the whole point. They have no way of knowing if the same guy keeps hitting them up just to waste their time, unless they make clients use a number that they can save to keep track of clients who have wasted their time, or acted badly, and refuse to book an appointment with them next time. It's for safety and for not having their time wasted (which costs them money), not because they want to get into your personal business.
