You're correct about genetic genealogy being used to solve cold crime cases, I remember watching 60 minutes episode about it, though that was not what it was meant for in it's inception, it was quickly used to help LE solve old crime cases, usually involving murder. A man was arrested & charged with murder based on DNA evidence found under the victims fingernails.

Come to find out a paramedic had picked up the accused perpetrator who was passed out drunk, brought him to the hospital where he spent the night which was the same night of the murder.

Good thing the defense investigator was on their toes as LE wasn't & a lot of times don't look passed the end of their nose.
