Yes, you're naive. The problem isn't your phone number showing up. It would be what's in the messages. The crime is in agreeing to pay money for a sex act. It doesn't have to take place, though if phone evidence would show it did, so much the worse. 99% of stings there is no act. Its in the agreement to pay money for it. That's why its not smart to discuss sex acts and money in messages (or phone calls). That's why its smart never to use phone numbers that can be traced to you (even with forensic analysis and subpoenas) and why its smart not to give out personally identifying information. They have to I'd you to charge you.

The passion pixie case in Beaver Dam a few years ago has been mentioned before, and is the most extreme case of what can happen. In that case LE got a search warrant for the premises and all the electronics. The electronics were sent to the state crime lab for forensic analysis. Her gmail account was subpoenaed. After a years worth on analysis of all that LE charged her with 29 misdemeanor prostitution counts and 3 felonies, ALL from evidence found with the search warrants, ALL for things that happened 1-3 years prior. Also 12 ish (forget the exact number) of her monger clients were charged with 29 matching misdemeanor counts. EVERYONE pled guilty in plea bargains. Imagine LE showing up at your door with an arrest warrant for something you did or messaged about 3 years ago.

Granted, this is unusual. And this only happens in cases where LE wants to make a big splash with publicity. However, even though its rare, don't assume it doesn't happen. It does.

Busted by a White Knight? As I read from the Freeman she was busted by LE.

Even if she deleated her texts daily, I would have to believe LE can still get the messages from the carrier. Just because it's not on your phone anymore doesn't mean it don't exist. The question is will local LE go to that extreme.
