A quick check about Instagram on Wikipedia showed me that Instagram is owned by Facebook. And I know that Messenger is also Facebook. For them to be mining other phone numbers along with contact names by going through unsuspecting users phones when they use these apps is beyond reprehensible. I have only used messenger at a minimum and mostly on my desktop computer.

The mashable article was enlightening! I now at least know that the 'People you may know' BS on Facebook is based on something. I am so glad that I am not part of the generation that grew up with social media.

So, Facebook seems to be a better tool than I thought. I will add it to my toolbox. But, I will still say that it can't know everything. To prove that point to myself, I did enter a few numbers of some providers that I know that have used the same numbers for quit some time, but nothing came up. I also entered the phone numbers of providers that I found out their real names through other means. Facebook could not find them through their phone numbers. I know they are on Facebook and do not have their phone numbers in their contact info, but I don't know if they use messenger or Instagram. Knowing them as I do, I don't think they use those apps. So, even if Facebook is better than I thought, if it still fails to get results, to my original point, there are other options to consider.

This facilitates my inquiries to find true identities of providers to help me make better choices. That's it. I have absolutely no reason to have a facebook page about my personal life. So, Facebook doesn't know that, by my real name, I even exist!

All facebook is likely to do is a search within it's own database which consists of information provided by it's subscribers. It's not that it can't get the information from public sources and use it to their advantage, but I doubt that they do. My experiment backs that up.

Some information is available on people in public records including phone numbers, That is how services that, for a fee, get information to provide background checks. So, while no criminal charges could be filed against Facebook for getting and divulging information that it could get that way, they could potentially face civil lawsuits from people whose information leaked out because of that practice. But, more importantly, if it ever got out into the media that they did that sort of thing, backlash would be severe. They have already taken a hit from people who got fed up with them over the Cambridge-Analytica data hijacking scandal. Many facebook accounts got closed and other repercussions occurred..

About public databases, companies do make some of the information they get on us publicly available. For example, if you applied for a mortgage, had a bankruptcy, got a student loan, or whatever, some of the information about you is somewhere an can be found by these background check services.

My point is that Facebook has it's limits. Sure, it can be added as a tool. There are plenty of people that put way too much information on there than they should. So, it is possible to find people who put their phone numbers in their profiles but have not conducted any business that would have gotten their information into publicly available database. So, yes. Facebook can be a tool. But, if it can't find anything, I'm just saying, don't stop there.

Another thing to consider. If they are smart, they will only use a burner number for their escort business. Also, they will obtain a burner number by only using a fake name and email address so as to have absolutely no linkage between that number and their true identity. And yes, I did find someone's true identity because they did not use all fake information to acquire the number. That is just one example of the tiniest of clues that some of them leave behind.
