It was spun as protecting Facebook users from scammers looking for info, however that feature was already there if you wanted not to be found by your phone you could make that choice on your own. More likely they grew to understand that people buying on Craigslist, etc. Were using Facebook as a resource to check on buyers / sellers and they wanted to remove that feature thereby driving business to Facebook Marketplace.
