There are some other fairly easy things to do to make sure you're dealing with a real person. You'd be surprised with how many women are using part of their email address as their handle. Searching for that or the contact info they give you on FB is an easy way to both confirm that they're real and even see some pics beyond ones that put them in the best light. Of course, Tineye is a great way to identify fake pics or escorts, etc.

I Google their numbers, pictures, email addy, anything they send me. I could give a whole tutorial on SA, as I'm sure a couple others here could as well. I've got about 2 yrs of activity there on both the success and fail sides, but it generally takes weeding through the stack just like our other resource sites (BP, CL, etc).
