Learning even something as basic as how to say "Hello" and "Thank you" helps. I've had far better sessions with Asians at MP's when I could address mamasan and the provider in their language. Most smart phones will give you access to a basic translation with an audio playback you can listen to and memorize. Just be sure to check translations: I once tried to learn something more complex, and after I'd memorized the phrase, I entered the text for a reverse translation. Found out I was asking for something *very* different (and slightly embarrassing).

My point is, stereotype works both ways. It's a sad truth.

If you are White and know Mandarin, you are off a good start, if you are ethnic minorities, chances are not as good, but if you let them know you are a good citizen of Uncle Sam (your turn to sell the illusion of helping them get green cards), you odds may increase for getting these great deals like Bob's story.

A genuine personal connection is yet another unicorn in this hobby. Like meeting people in real life, it all depends on your look, $, charm and a million things. Sometimes it is a two way street, often time it's just a one way.
