I agree remaining silent is the best thing to do. If they persist tell them you are exercising your right to remain silent. Always remember that they are questioning you to get evidence to make arrest and strong case for a conviction in court.

Since the cops had no evidence, the arrest and night in the pokey was the big punishment and at trial it all went away with a good lawyer.

The biggest chance is that you won't talk your way out of anything at the scene. It may be a huge hassle but shutting up, getting a lawyer and letting the lawyer challenge everything at trial is the best way to keep your record clean. Cops are not kindergarten teachers. They do forgive you for telling the truth. If they are asking you stuff, they either don't know it or are trying to get you to say something incriminating.

It might be a good idea to record the situation when the cops stop. Inform them you are recording the conversation. If they object tell them you have the legal right to do so.
