I've never had any problems with giving out my work information to the well-established agencies for verification. Usually they will let you know when they're calling your work number, and either you can pick up and say "yup it's me" or if someone else picks up, they'll just ask to speak to you. Also if you can get work verified with just one agency, then most of the time any other agencies you come across, you can refer them to your first agency. Before you know it, you'll have a long list of references from agencies and independents, and you'll never have to worry about work verifications again. Like anything in life however, you do need to man up, take a chance, and take that first big step out the door.
