I've had mixed results doing that and it's a violation of the hobbyist "prime directive" for many. One was a referral and the other was a provider I saw for many many years and was friendly with. I've found that the conversation in a 1/2 to 1 hr date is idle chit chat compared to a dinner or an overnighter. It's possible that you don't find them interesting and then have to suck it up while waiting for the fun part. In one case a MP girl just filled my year for hours about the other mean girls she works with and the owner of the MP. Blah, blah, blah. She was super nice and was comfortable enough to vent to me, but I had a throbbing headache afterwards.
