Always be cautious of going into houses. I've done it a few times and have mostly been ok, but I had one experience similar to yours and vowed never to do it again. Condos and apartments are a maybe, the risks are less since they know people are around and noise can bring attention, but once you are in a single family home all bets are off and there are too many rooms and places for danger to be lurking.
