Did they produce a warrant for that search? You do not have to consent to a search without a warrant. If you refuse a search, they can detain you long enough to come back with drug dogs if they want, if they think they can establish "probable cause". But you do not have to consent to a search. And it sounds like if they brought the dogs, they would have found nothing, and thus still could not do a physical search without a warrant. And it sounds like they would have found nothing to trigger a physical search even if they brought the dogs.
