If you create a secondary google account and sign up for google voice there, you're first number is free, heck you can add addional numbers for a one time fee of $20. The only thing is, swapping numbers is not intuitive. But google voice is the reason I no longer have a burner phone.

It's not worth the risk / hassle of constantly switching between my personal and fake google accounts. I use google voice all the time as it is my primary contact number. Not worth the risk of accidentally getting those mixed up etc. Also you want all that stuff to be going through google servers. I'll take a pass there. Like I said $5 per month is nothing. It could be $50 per month I would still pay it. Just the convenience of not having a separate phone anymore is worth the cost.

You're using your personal google account for that? You can create a fake google account but it's too much trouble to swap back and forth etc. Burner has a nice feature. You can burn the account on a moment's notice and everything is deleted and gone in a second. The option is right there on the main page of the app so you don't have to hunt it down in the settings / menu etc.

Considering that I paid for a separate physical cell phone for the last 15+ years for my playtime, $5/ month is nothing.

It's possible that some of these obviously fake accounts with crazy fees are "cashing" schemes.

I happened to chat with some Russian hacker types the other day (I'm looking for some folks for a cybersecurity project and it's introduced me to some interesting "characters"!), and they were explaining to me how stolen card numbers are sometimes "cashed" using freelancer sites: the fraudster sets up a fake profile, offers a service, and then "buys" the service through fake accounts which are used to register stolen cards. They "pay" themselves, thus siphoning funds off the cards (which then go through cryptocurrency mixers, Monero, etc).

INSTANTLY I though of SA and some of it's rather optimistic pricing schemes: depending on SA's level of card scrutiny, folks might just be using it to cash cards.
