That 1/3 number is just not accurate. Many doctors tell their patients that so they feel better. The reality is no one knows for sure, but estimates range as low as 1 in 20 (5%) to your 1/3 (33%). You tend to find the higher numbers coming from the Herpes support group web pages and the like. This does not mean people should not be careful.

Also, X Facta's post is 100% true. However, I would point out that HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be cross linked from oral-genital contact. I have posted about this before. Furthermore, there is an immunizing effect from either infection, meaning if you already have cold sores around your mouth, it provides some (not complete) protection from infection from genital herpes.
