Basically you have to investigate and decide for yourself whether it's worth a risk to pay deposits. Sometimes it is, but more often it isn't.

The reason many ask for a deposit is because many of the douche bag mongers out there don't bother to show up if something else comes along. The something else can be almost anything, including a better offer from someone higher on their list to see. Mix in that most do not even bother to notify of the cancellation. Image being a provider who blocks off time and turns down other would be appointments for that time slot and the client is a now show. So they either ask for a deposit or double and triple book and take whoever shows up first. Ever drive somewhere and then be ghosted?

They may say it is for safety, but most of the time it is simple economics. Note that I do not provide deposits.

I have never paid a deposit. If they require one I move on. Aside from the high likelihood of getting ripped off I'm not going to create a financial record of my indiscretions.
