It's an antiseptic. So same as washing your hands to prevent catching the cold or flu, it is a hygene solution. Note that once you catch the cold or flu, washing your hands won't cure it. There are very many studies done on Betadine confirming it is effective against bacteria and viruses for prevention, but it is not a treatment for someone who already has it. So the same way Listerine kills 99% of bacteria in your mouth and leaves you fresh for hours, eventually that 1% grows back. Not bad, but not a cure-all.
