Thanks for this, Red. Very informative and important as syphilis can be extremely serious if not treated in time. I think this test is what all active mongers should get at least once yearly. Now, they don't have to go to Diamond Head Clinic for the annual blood test.

Yeah I regularly go to Tijuana to hit up their red light district. My limited understanding is that -1 can be from just kissing and is very common, but -2 is from sexual contact where an initial blister typically shows up at the entrance site in the first couple of weeks. So, in light of the foregoing, it can be difficult to know with accuracy where and when a person's HSV-1 infection occurred.

You're correct that it's extremely risky. A few years ago I went to Life Foundation on Ala Moana (now known as Hawaii Health and Harm Reduction Center) specifically for an HIV test (result was negative) because the Diamond Head clinic was not offering that test. The counselor there explained to me that if a woman is infected with HIV, having BB anal with her is the easiest way to catch that disease from her.
