Welcome to the area. My first suggestion would be to go six months back in this forum and just start reading posts, as you are not likely to get the "guide to the area" you are looking for. I have always viewed this forum the same way I view fishing forums. People want to be helpful in general, but they also don't want to find new people anchored on their hard earned spots when they go out. They certainly aren't going to hand the keys to the castle over to someone that just moved into town. What they will do, is be open about what spots NOT to fish, this forum is very good at helping you cross providers off your list.

As far as prices, there are different opinions on what we should be paying the area providers, and often the customer's perceived value is not close to in line with what the provider wants. As far as negotiating, my method to avoid what you described is to simply ask for their donations and if I feel they are too high, then I will say something like "Thanks for the response, if you decide to come down on that hhr rate, let me know as I'd love to meet. " or something like it. Then they can take it or leave it, and frankly they usually leave it, but occasionally it works out.
